Ozone Therapy

So what is Ozone Therapy?

Ozone is a 3 molecule version of oxygen or O2, labeled as O3. O3 is what is called a triatomic particle which carries a negative charge. The negative charge searches for and neutralizes anything with positive charge. “Bad cells”, including bacteria, viruses, cancer cells, or free radicals carry positive charges on their cell membranes. “Good cells” will typically have antioxidants on their cell membranes which will deter surface oxygenation.

Essentially, ozone makes your immune system work more efficiently, therefore making you more resistant to disease. The problem in dentistry has been how to efficiently dispense the ozone. But recently a company called Promolife, developed an ozone generator specifically for dentistry. They developed a dental handpiece which can directly administer the ozone to the areas of concern.

How does Dr. West apply Ozone to dentistry?

  1. Periodontal/gum disease: With the advanced Ozone generator that Dr. West uses, he is able to direct the Ozone directly into the gum pockets, to kill the bacteria which cause gum disease.
  2. Deep decay: Ozone can penetrate the bacteria in the dental tubules of the the tooth which carry bacteria to the nerve chamber. . Therefore minimizing the odds of needing a root canal.
  3. Sensitive teeth; Ozone gas administered to a sensitive or demineralized area of the tooth can harden compromised tooth structure and effectively eliminate sensitivity.

Ozone does not have any contraindications with other medications, therefore cross-reactions are not a concern at all. You cannot be allergic to ozone, because you cannot be allergic to oxygen.
